A “walking town” ...I heard this phrase at a meeting I attended recently. A woman was talking about how she'd like to see North Canton revert back to a “walking town” like it was when she was a young girl – she walked to stores, entertainment and restaurants. I was intrigued with the idea. The more I thought about it, the more I liked it on several different levels.
Working on Our Town, I've had the opportunity to become better acquainted with businesses and business owners in North Canton. Waiting in traffic or driving by at 35 mph, you catch mere glimpses. I've found there's plenty more to see and discover if you take the time to hit the sidewalks. .
Speaking of driving...with gas prices creeping up steadily, many of us are becoming a bit more conscience of time spent behind the wheel, particularly for those stop and start trips. Leaving the car in the driveway is an increasingly practical option for those of us who live within walking or biking distance of town.
Another benefit of living in a “walking town” is, of course, the exercise. Heading out for some ice cream on a hot summer night? Why not leash up the family dog, grab the kids and hoof it down to the ice cream shop. Think of it as a preemptive strike on those calories.
Finally, indulge yourself in a 'Mayberry Moment' and set out to discover the pure joy of living in a relatively safe city with decent sidewalks, nicely landscaped streets with inviting storefronts, and fellow walkers waiting to be greeted with a quick wave, nod, or smile. Bring back those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, indeed.
