Mayor David Held Speaks to Our Town

Mayor David Held met with Street Superintendent Joe Olesky and the City of North Canton’s service personnel to thank them for their hard work in keeping our roadways safe during a cold and snowy February.

February will be a memorable month due in part to the Valentines Day snow storm that hit northeast Ohio. Nearly 10 inches of snow and ice blanketed our community in just over a 24 hour period causing various cancellations and school closings. The snowstorm made for treacherous road conditions and presented a challenge to the North Canton Street Department.

The planning and preparation for a winter storm emergency took place during the summer months. City Administrator Earle Wise Jr. and Street Superintendent Joe Olesky and their team of 38 service workers stood ready when the storm hit. Personnel from the Street, Water, Sanitation, Park, Recreation, and Engineering Departments were waiting for the call and mobilized in less than 30 minutes.

The team hit the streets with 22 snow plow trucks and spread 500 tons of road salt in order to remove snow and ice from 94 miles of city roadway. The main roads and intersections were plowed and salted first and the side streets were addressed second. We all appreciated the patience of our residents during that time as the city personnel worked day and night to keep our roadways safe.

I would also like to thank our City Finance Director Julie Herr, Finance Chairman Pat DeOrio and the other members of City Council for their hard work on 2007 city budget. The city’s budget is balanced and complete in spite a 15% reduction in our income tax collections since the year 2000.

When the people of North Canton are faced with a challenge we come together and we overcome the challenge. It is the people of North Canton that make our community a great place to live, work and raise a family.
