YESTERYEARS

The Zion Church was located at site of the present cemetery on Pittsburg Rd. This building was completed in 1840, replacing the log cabin church established in 1814. Zion Church housed two congregations, the German Reformed and the Lutheran. The former (now the Zion United Church of Christ) built a church New Berlin in 1880, and the latter moved to the village in 1905.

192 Years Ago (1814)

The American Navy defeats the British at The Battle of Lake Champlain, New York.

The War of 1812 officially ends with the Peace Treaty signed in Ghent.

Land is donated on today’s Pittsburgh Road for Zion Church, Mt. Zion School, and burial grounds.

The cornerstone is laid for Zion Church.

112 YEARS AGO (1894)

Ladies Literary Club of New Berlin is founded.

The London Tower Bridge opens.

William McKinley is inaugurated for a second term as Governor of Ohio.

93 YEARS AGO (1913)

New York City’s Grand Central Terminal is opened.

Henry Ford introduces the first true assembly line, reducing the production time of an auto from 12.5 to

1.5 hours.

In New Berlin, electric streetlights replace gas. Water lines and sewers are installed throughout the village.

29 YEARS AGO (1977)

Apple II, the first personal computer, goes on sale.

Andreas R. Gruentzig introduces balloon angioplasty. The procedure provides a way to unclog diseased arteries.

The north campus of Hoover High School is built on Seventh Street.
